Among the popular nutritional supplements used to optimize exercise recovery by athletes, lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes, is widely used, with clinical research evidencing that pure lycopene supplements are a potent antioxidant which can reduce exercise-induced lipid peroxidation (a mechanism in which free radicals damage cells by “stealing” electrons from lipids in cell membranes).

In the athletes, tomato powder enhanced total antioxidant capacity by 12%. Interestingly, the tomato powder treatment also resulted in a significantly reduced elevation of 8-isoprostane compared to both the lycopene supplement and the placebo. The tomato powder also significantly reduced exhaustive exercise MDA compared to the placebo, however, no such difference was indicated between the lycopene and placebo treatments.

Led by Shuba Singhal, PhD, this randomized, controlled clinical study was conducted at the Department of Orthopedics of Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital/Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. For the study, 193 patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee were randomized to receive either turmeric extract (BCM-95) as a 500 mg capsule two times daily, or a 650 mg tablet of paracetamol three times daily for six weeks.

Makers of dietary supplements specifically were mentioned in the context of health care or public health companies, and listed with other industries like biotechnology, distributors of medical equipment, personal protective equipment, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, even tissue and paper towel products.

Astaxanthin is a unique fat-soluble antioxidant carotenoid found in algae, yeast, salmon, krill, shrimp and other kinds of fish and crustaceans. Clinical trials indicate that astaxanthin improve the condition of the skin, enhance recovery from exercise, relieve occasional indigestion, support gastric health, help maintain cholesterol level within a healthy range, enhance immune response, promote healthy vision, and support the male reproductive system.

“Most of our member companies wanted to stay open, and were staying open under the assumption that they were a part of either the food sector or the health care sector,” said Steve Mister, president and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), in an interview. “What this does is it makes it clear. So if someone from state law enforcement should show up and ask, 'Why are you open?’ they can directly point to the CISA guidance.”
Mister added, “When the first round of this memo came out, we were pretty confident that we would be included by inference … but it didn’t expressly say dietary supplements. You kind of had to read between the lines to read us into it.”
