The Finutra team had the pleasure of participating in the 2023 Vitafoods exhibition. After three years, we reunited with many valued customers, and it was great to see how everyone has grown and evolved in their business endeavors.

In a new pilot study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, researchers aimed to investigate the antioxidant benefits of lycopene, but specifically, how they stacked up against tomato powder, a tomato supplement closer to its whole food origin which contains not only lycopene but a broader profile of micronutrients and various bioactive components.

With the brevity of the study duration, the authors did hypothesize, however, that a longer-term supplementation regimen of lycopene could result in stronger antioxidant benefits for the isolated nutrient, in accordance with other studies that were carried out over a period of several weeks. Nonetheless, whole tomato contains chemical compounds that can enhance beneficial outcomes in synergy compared to a single compound, the authors said.

These results were positively reflected in the BCM-95 group’s serum inflammatory markers: CRP levels were reduced by 37.21%, and TNF-α levels were cut by 74.81%, indicating BCM-95 performed better than paracetamol.

Knee arthritis symptoms of pain, joint stiffness, and diminished physical function were evaluated using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). After six weeks of treatment, responder analysis showed significant improvement in WOMAC scores across all parameters comparable to the paracetamol group, with 18% of the BCM-95 group reporting 50% improvement, and 3% of subjects noting 70% improvement.
