In a new pilot study, published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, researchers aimed to investigate the antioxidant benefits of lycopene, but specifically, how they stacked up against tomato powder, a tomato supplement closer to its whole food origin which contains not only lycopene but a broader profile of micronutrients and various bioactive components.

“Most of our member companies wanted to stay open, and were staying open under the assumption that they were a part of either the food sector or the health care sector,” said Steve Mister, president and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), in an interview. “What this does is it makes it clear. So if someone from state law enforcement should show up and ask, 'Why are you open?’ they can directly point to the CISA guidance.”
Mister added, “When the first round of this memo came out, we were pretty confident that we would be included by inference … but it didn’t expressly say dietary supplements. You kind of had to read between the lines to read us into it.”

“The goal of the current study was to build on the earlier studies to give a better clarity and specificity by including more markers and a better scoring methodology,” said Benny Antony, joint managing director for Arjuna. “The anti-arthritic effect of BCM-95 in osteoarthritis is attributed to its capability to modulate anti-inflammatory markers TNF and CRP.”

The study was a follow up to an Arjuna study conducted over a year ago that demonstrated a positive link between its flagship curcumin formulation and osteoarthritic care.
