Results of a new study published in the journal Biomed Central BMC showed turmeric extract was as effective as paracetamol in reducing pain and other symptoms of knee osteoarthritis (OA). The study demonstrated the bioavailable compound was more effective in reducing inflammation.

“We found that 1-week supplementation with tomato powder positively augmented total antioxidant capacity and was more potent when compared to lycopene supplementation,” the authors of the study said. “These trends in 8-isoprostane and MDA support the notion that over a short period of time, tomato powder, not synthetic lycopene, has the potential to alleviate exercise-induced lipid peroxidation. MDA is a biomarker of oxidation of total lipid pools but 8-isoprostane belongs to F2-isoprostane class and is a reliable biomarker of radical-induced reaction which specifically reflects the oxidation of arachidonic acid.”

These results were positively reflected in the BCM-95 group’s serum inflammatory markers: CRP levels were reduced by 37.21%, and TNF-α levels were cut by 74.81%, indicating BCM-95 performed better than paracetamol.

Knee arthritis symptoms of pain, joint stiffness, and diminished physical function were evaluated using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). After six weeks of treatment, responder analysis showed significant improvement in WOMAC scores across all parameters comparable to the paracetamol group, with 18% of the BCM-95 group reporting 50% improvement, and 3% of subjects noting 70% improvement.
